Clover

And then there is Clover This old gal has worked her heart out for 25 years. Starting life in Canada as a broodmare, at some point Clover found herself on an Amish farm here in Maine where she continued to give her people babies and at the same time, work the fields. Serving people her entire life and what did she get for it? Plowing the field one morning, then hauling herself to the dealer that afternoon - the marks from her collar are still embedded in her chest after over 2 months at our barn. Clover has had a tooth extracted that was rotting and causing her incredible pain, the dentists' opinion was there was not much tooth surface to do the job of chewing hay - Her tail has been docked and will never grow back (she is sporting some extensions now), She was full of bot eggs which came bubbling out of her belly shortly after arriving.
We have worked hard to try to put some weight on this tired girl, 10 quarts of grain a day, soaked cubes three times a day and steamed hay which she sometimes eats, sometimes not. We are finally starting to see a tiny bit of flesh on her rump, the first place to start to fill out when you are an old lady. Clover has had Andrew, our farrier, work on her feet twice, the first time she struggled to lift her hind legs. Trying with all her might she barely could hold them long enough to get a quick trim. The last time, she stood like a brave girl and was able to hold them up longer and her feet look like a freshly manicured princess (with a crack in one that is growing out nicely Clover loves to go for walks and lumbers along with her giant body - slightly nervous with motorized vehicles but is still very polite on the lead line and listens to her handler for guidance. How could she still trust people I have no idea but she seems to enjoy when we are around. Her hind legs are itchy and covered in scabs, we wash them daily and apply lotion and sprays and it seems to help for a bit.
Clover will most likely spend her days here but if the right person, someone that has a huge heart and the wallet to feed her comes along, she would definately love to find a big field to live her days in and a person that would understand her old lady needs and give her clean extensions on her tail when needed
