MOLLY
July 14 2021
I was born by another name, beside my mother who protected me from danger and kept me warm and safe. The entire world was ahead of me and my future would be a grand adventure. For many years I worked hard every day. My name changed and my fields were different but I kept working as hard as I could. The years went by and my body was getting very tired. My job became hard to do but I always looked ahead with my ears pricked forward, ready to try whatever was asked of me. One day I found myself in a pen with many other donkeys. I was scared and missed my open field. People walked by and looked at all of us and I would go to the fence to see if they would take me out of this scary place. People had always been nice to me and I was sure someone would help. Finally my halter was hooked and I was led to a truck as I started my final adventure. This one took me to places I had never been where white stuff fell from the sky and the smell of salt was in the air. When I stepped of the truck for the final time I became Molly.
We were the lucky ones when Molly stepped off that truck. We had asked for a middle age jenny to keep Blossom happy and what we got was an ancient gem that we were given the opportunity to love on for her final adventure. Molly and Blossom became best friends, bickering sisters and constant companions. They spent their days in the palace of the queens and were always the favorite when visitors came.
The snow came and Blossom and I were put in our stall where we could venture out during the day but stay cozy warm at night in the barn with the horses. I was happy. I didn’t have to work and I always had a full tummy. When my feet hurt it was hard to move, I was given a special food that helped me. When the flies and warmth returned we were once again allowed to live in the donkey palace. This time we were joined by Tilly, a youngster that reminded me of my own babies I had raised in the past. Tilly and Blossom became good pals and I was getting more and more tired. The special food was not working as well and it was getting harder for me to move. I saw my people come to the pasture, my favorite had a piece of turnip in her hand. They had another with them, she was quiet and kind. I ate my turnip and felt a pinch in my neck, I was very tired and layed down. My feet didn’t hurt any more, my legs were not achy; it felt good to rest my body down and not hurt. As I closed my eyes I saw Blossom watching a short distance away. Good bye my friend. I then saw my mother and all the friends I had met over all my adventures, all those many years ago. They said Hi and I said Hi, my name is Molly.
Blossom and Tilly are doing fine. I think animals deal with death so differently then we do. They watched, Tilly sniffed her and then they went about their day. It was like they knew but it was ok, she was ready. I hope the tears running down your cheek right now can be replaced by a smile as you remember this sweet donkey who brought so much love and gentleness to our little donkey herd.
