RUBY

For those that have been following Rubys story, you know she is a tired old girl. Working a lifetime in the Amish community, Ruby now has the chance to live a life of leisure and she deserves it. Ruby is ready for her next chapter and we are determined to find her that perfect ending. When she first came everyone asked, can she be ridden? We really had no idea – was she broke? Yes. The kids all have sat on her but would she ever be strong enough, healthy enough to carry an adult? We know know the answer – NO. Arriving almost 4 months ago on May 2, Ruby has gained weight, strength and attitude every day but she is still so weak that the farrier can sometimes only do one hind foot. Her left back is sometimes swollen and often times looks painful. But Ruby never complains. The possibilities and causes are many but the end result is the same – Ruby deserves to spend the rest of her life munching in a field and snoozing in the sun.
Ruby is looking for her person and we are ready to help her find her forever home. That person will need to have some horse experience, preferably draft experience. She is a big girl and her size alone can be intimidating – She tries very hard to be gentle but her lack of strength sometimes makes it necessary for her person to be aware and ready to move. Her feet are difficult to work on because of her balance and lack of muscle – something we are working on with stretches. If you are looking for a horse you can simply put out in the pasture and let them be – Ruby probably isn’t that horse –if you are looking for a horse to go on walks and trail rides ? Ruby is definitely not that horse. If you are looking for a horse that waits for you to come scratch her belly? To hand graze her on the lawn? To simply love her? Ruby is waiting for you. –She wont complain and will tolerate conditions that other horses would swish and fuss about. Stoic and tough, Ruby needs someone that will make sure she isn’t being bullied in the pasture (she is very much the low man and wont fight for her food) She will simply stand and hang her head and wait for the others to leave before she tries to eat. She waits for Willow to come out in the morning and follows her to her hay pile. Best friends? No but Willow doesn’t pin her ears at her and allows her to share a hay pile. Tommy will share a scratch now and then but it always ends in Ruby squealing and moving away. Ruby needs a very special home and we are sure you are out there….. You just need to come meet this gentle giant and your heart will melt.

Its been a few days, I just couldn't come up with the words that would do her justice. On Thursday, in the light drizzle, Ruby and I lumbered down the driveway one last time. At the bottom our veterinarian, Kat, was waiting. I've made that walk too often it seems, it never gets easier. We talked the whole way down, I told her I loved her and I was so glad she had been able to spend the summer with us. I told her Willow and Mac would miss her but that they would be ok. She stumbeled a couple of times and stepped lightly over the rocks in the road.
Ruby was tired and it didnt matter how much food we pumped into her, her aching muscles were ready to rest. The cold ground and hard mud were not going to get better for a very long time - Ruby was happy and that is really all that counts. As graceful as a young colt, Ruby layed down one last time.
I will never regret giving the old girl the chance to die happy.
