Mack
October 24 2021
Ok so i finally have just a minute to sit down and tell you about Mack. We dont know much about his early life but he is a 17 year old belgian that is sweet as a muffin He was surrendered to us by a family that loved him dearly. They acquired him to be a trail horse, which evidently, in his previous home he traveled many miles. Before that he came through a sale barn and they believe he came from the land of the Amish. Somewhere in his travels he got an injury that will prevent him from ever working or being ridden again. His hind fetlock is full of arthritis and our vet recommended he never be ridden again. So, really no drama. just a big guy that has bumped around alot in the last year or two - he is a bit confused, 'where am i now?", trying to find his place in this new family - not easy when you have a herd that is all settled and you try to find where you belong. After a night side by side with Tommy, and a day in the adjoining pasture where he met everyone, we decided to put Mack in with the herd. Wrong decision. Everything was fine, until it wasnt. No ones fault, just horses being horses. Mack didnt push any buttons but when Tommy decided to just remind him the girls were his, Mack didnt back down. It was an aweful fight, no one got seriously injured but those two boys were out for blood and they are both big. Anyway, it was a few seconds of blurr... seemed like hours but they parted for just a minute and i grabbed Tommy and Mack stayed his distance and they were seperated - probably never going to try to put those two together again! Tommy and Mack were fine, Mack and the girls were fine, but i should have known, Tommy + mares + Mack = nothing good will happen. Mack has stayed out back in the run in since then with only supervised visits to the adjoining pasture. Today we brought Ruby back with him - watched them closely but all seems well. I hate to have anyone alone and Ruby has basically never found her friend in the herd, fingers crossed Mack will be her friend. We have been asked already if we are going to rehome Mack, these decisions are so hard because he is not a beginner horse by any means, he is big, he has issues with picking his feet up, he cant be alone but a single sexed pasture is definatly a must. This boy just needs to know where he belongs and then he may stop feeling the need to defend himself - he didnt start any thing but he wasnt going to back down either.... If he and Ruby bond? well we would love to rehome them together hahahaha Do you have a run in shed? big enough for a couple of ton of horse flesh? a loft full of hay? well do we have a pretty pasture pet pair for you :}

Mac (or Macaroni as I like to call him) is looking for his forever barn. Having bounced around for the past couple of years, Mac is uncertain about what is expected and what is going to happen to him or be asked of him. Even with all this going on in his big head, Mac is a gentleman through and through. Because of a previous injury, he can not be ridden. The vet said even with injections, he should not be asked to be more then a companion. He needs a home with horse experience, preferably draft experience. He has a hard time lifting and holding his feet up for the farrier – we have gotten his fronts up but our farrier will be here Thursday and we will know more. His is super good for the vet and dentist, both of which he has seen recently. Mac would do best in a single sex herd – either all geldings or all mares. He and Tommy (our established gelding with his herd of mares) did not get along – Mac didn’t start anything but he didn’t back down either. If someone is looking for a gorgeous horse, with tons of personality, ready to go for walks in the woods or on the road, needing someone special in his life, if you need a friend – please consider giving this boy his final and forever home and let him just be Mac – you will enjoy every minute of being his person.
Mac is about 17 hands and 17 years old. He was ridden extensively in previous years (prior to his injury) and it is possible he was an Amish boy before finding himself at the sale barn.

Out for our morning walk
December 13 2021
This morning, at 330, i stepped out of the door into the crisp morning air, the stars were shining bright, the clearest sky i have seen in a while.
Rescue is seldom described as a fairytale adventure. It is usually days full of shoveling poop, picking out muddy hooves, dealing with herd dynamics, lugging hay bales and grain, worrying about this horse or that one and making decisions that are seldom easy to make.
At the barn the donkeys honked, thinking i was just early with breakfast. I walked out back and gave Mack his breakfast for the last time. We talked for a minute while he ate and then, like a perfect gentleman, he followed me into the dark, calm and trusting. He stepped onto the giant trailer that was waiting in the driveway. We closed the doors and I said good bye to Mack.
Mack is on his way to Virginia, a long ass trip down the east coast today but he is in very good hands. Kelly Britts fell in love with Mack and knew immediately he would be a perfect fit at her home at Falcons Nest Farm in Virginia. In time, after settling in, Mack is going to be part of the equine program at Horse and Soul Counseling. A program that provides mental health counseling through equine assisted psychotherapy to veterans among others.
I watched the lights of the trailer leave down the road and thought sometimes fairytales do happen - and then i saw (i am not kidding) a shooting star
Happily ever after Mack - Happily ever after
